The 5 Largest Trophies in Sport

Trophies have been a symbol of achievement and recognition for centuries, and the larger the trophy, the more impressive the achievement. We decided to take a look at five of the biggest trophies in the world that represent excellence and accomplishment in their respective fields.

1. Borg-Warner Trophy - Indianapolis 500 Trophy

The Borg-Warner Trophy is an iconic piece of motorsports history and a symbol of excellence in American racing. The trophy has been awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, one of the most prestigious and historic races in the world, since 1936. The trophy is made of sterling silver and stands at 5 feet 4.75 inches tall, weighing approximately 110 pounds.

The Borg-Warner Trophy was commissioned by the Borg-Warner Corporation, a global leader in automotive technology, in 1935. The trophy was designed by Robert J. Hill and crafted by Spaulding-Gorham, a silversmith in Chicago. The trophy features a bas-relief sculpture of each Indianapolis 500 winner's face, with their name, year of victory, and average speed engraved on a silver plate below their likeness. The base of the trophy is adorned with plaques displaying the names of each race winner, going back to Ray Harroun, who won the inaugural race in 1911.

The Borg-Warner Trophy has undergone a few changes over the years. In 1986, the base of the trophy was replaced with a new, larger base to accommodate the growing number of winners' names.  The trophy will continue to grow as more space is needed to accomodate the growing list of winners.

2. Costa del Sol Trophy

The Costa del Sol Trophy is a pre-season friendly football tournament held annually in Spain. The tournament was first played in 1984 and is traditionally held in August, just before the start of the European football season. The tournament is hosted by Malaga CF, a Spanish football club based in the coastal city of Malaga, and features four teams from around the world.

The Costa del Sol Trophy itself is a beautiful piece of silverware, featuring an elegant design with a football on top and a base adorned with a map of the Costa del Sol region. The trophy stands at approximately 1.2m tall and is awarded to the winner of the tournament, and each year, a new team gets to take it home as a symbol of their pre-season success.

3. The America's Cup Trophy

The America's Cup trophy, also known as the "Auld Mug," is one of the most iconic and prestigious trophies in the world of sailing. The trophy was first awarded in 1851 to the winner of the Royal Yacht Squadron's annual regatta around the Isle of Wight, and since then has become a symbol of excellence and achievement in the sport of sailing.

The America's Cup trophy itself is a work of art, made entirely of silver and standing at just over two feet tall.  With the base it stands at approximately 1.1m tall.  The trophy features an ornate handle and a large, intricately designed bowl that is adorned with figures representing the various elements of the sea. The trophy is inscribed with the names of each winning yacht club, as well as the year of their victory.

4. The Davis Cup Trophy

The Davis Cup trophy is one of the most prestigious and recognizable trophies in the world of sports. This beautiful silver trophy has been awarded to the winning team of the Davis Cup tournament since its inception in 1900, making it one of the oldest and most celebrated trophies in tennis.

The trophy is named after Dwight F. Davis, a Harvard student and tennis player who came up with the idea for an international tennis competition between the United States and Great Britain. Davis himself designed the original trophy, which was crafted by Shreve, Crump & Low, a jeweler in Boston.

The trophy cup itself is made entirely of sterling silver and with its base is approximately 110 cm tall.  Interestingly, the trophy is almost as wide as it is tall with its oversize base being almost 107cm wide.  This means it is too heavy to hold aloft, weighing in at over 100kg.

5. The Stanley Cup Trophy

The Stanley Cup is the oldest and most coveted trophy in the world of professional ice hockey, with a rich and storied history that has made it an icon of the sport. From its humble beginnings in 1893 as a simple silver bowl to its current form as a 35-pound, silver and nickel alloy cup standing 89.5cm tall, the Stanley Cup has undergone numerous changes over the years, but its unique design and the traditions surrounding it have remained the same.

The Stanley Cup trophy is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, a Canadian Governor-General who was an avid fan of ice hockey and wanted to create a championship trophy for the best amateur ice hockey team in Canada. The original trophy, which was known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, was a simple silver bowl that stood just 7 inches tall and cost $48.67 to make.

Over the years, the Stanley Cup trophy has undergone several redesigns and additions to accommodate the growing number of teams and players vying for the championship. The current design features a large, silver bowl that sits atop a series of rings, each containing the names of the winning teams and players.
